TL;DR:Choosing the right time to visit Tanzania can enhance your safari experience. From the dry season’s epic wildlife congregations to the lush wet season’s baby animals, every month offers something special. Read on to discover the ideal time to explore northern Tanzania, the southern Serengeti, and beyond!
Tanzania has a tropical climate with two main rainy seasons and two dry seasons. Knowing the seasons is key to planning a safari in Tanzania, as it affects when you’ll see the most wildlife and what kind of experiences you’ll have.
These seasonal changes affect all the parks, influencing both wildlife behavior and visitor experiences.
The climate in Tanzania, like much of East Africa, changes a lot depending on the region. The northern highlands tend to be cooler, while the southern lowlands are warmer.
The rainy season may not be ideal for a Tanzania safari, but it has unique benefits. The rain can make roads impassable, which makes travel tough, and the wildlife is spread out, so animals are harder to spot.
However, this season is a dream for bird watchers! The rains bring migratory birds, so it’s a fantastic time for bird watching in areas like Lake Manyara. The lush green landscape is beautiful, and you might even spot baby animals in southern Serengeti. So while it’s not great for big game viewing, the wet season offers special sights for those interested in Tanzania’s full variety of wildlife. The rainy season impacts all the parks, making some areas lush and green while others become challenging to navigate.
The wet season in Tanzania, spanning from November to May, transforms the landscape into a lush, green paradise. This period is divided into two parts: the short rains from November to December and the long rains from March to May. While the heavy rainfall might deter some travelers, the wet season offers its own unique charm and advantages.
For bird watchers, the wet season is a dream come true. Migratory birds flock to Tanzania, making it an excellent time for bird watching. Parks like Lake Manyara and the Ngorongoro Crater become havens for colorful species, including flamingos, storks, and pelicans. The vibrant green landscapes also provide stunning backdrops for photography, capturing the essence of Tanzania’s natural beauty.
Visiting during the wet season means fewer crowds in popular national parks like the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater. This can lead to a more peaceful and intimate safari experience. However, it’s important to note that some lodges and camps may close during this time, and road conditions can be challenging due to the rain. Despite these potential drawbacks, the wet season offers a unique and serene way to experience Tanzania’s wildlife and landscapes.
If you’re wondering when is the best time to go on safari in Tanzania, it’s during the dry season from June to October. This period offers some of the best wildlife viewing, as animals gather around water sources, making them easier to spot. With clear skies and warm days, it’s also the most comfortable time for a Tanzania safari. During the dry season, wildlife viewing is excellent across all the parks, making it the best time to visit.
The Great Wildebeest Migration is one of the highlights during this season, as large herds of wildebeest, zebras, and other animals cross the northern Serengeti. The migration peaks between July and October, often crossing the Mara River in dramatic scenes where they face swift currents and lurking crocodiles.
If you want to visit during the peak season, you’ll find more safari options and open safari vehicles for clear views. While high season prices can be a bit more expensive, you’ll have access to prime wildlife experiences, making it well worth it.
The dry season is Tanzania’s peak season for safaris, with sunny days, cooler nights, and little to no rain. This makes it easier to travel between parks, with fewer mud-filled roads and great conditions for game viewing.
During this time, animals gather around lakes, rivers, and watering holes, making wildlife viewing easier and more exciting. The Serengeti National Park is especially popular during this season, as it hosts the Great Migration. Visitors can witness vast herds in full swing, moving across the plains, and predators such as lions and cheetahs following closely.
Parks like the Ngorongoro Conservation Area also offer excellent wildlife sightings year-round, but the clear, dry air from June to October provides perfect visibility. If you’re planning a trip to Tanzania’s national parks, this season provides the best safari experience with ideal conditions for early morning safari drives.
Tanzania has numerous national parks and reserves, each with unique features that make them ideal for different types of safaris in East Africa. The most famous parks are the Serengeti National Park, Ngorongoro Conservation Area, and Tarangire National Park, which attract many visitors every year.
The Serengeti is renowned for the wildebeest migration and wide-open savannas, while the Ngorongoro Crater offers a stunning, enclosed ecosystem where you can see a variety of animals, including the “Big Five.” Tarangire is known for its giant baobab trees and large elephant herds, especially during the dry season.
For a more remote adventure, you can visit Ruaha National Park in southern Tanzania or the parks in western Tanzania, like those near Lake Tanganyika. These areas are less crowded and provide a quieter safari experience with beautiful landscapes and plenty of wildlife.
Tanzania is home to some of the most iconic national parks in Africa, each offering unique experiences and breathtaking scenery. Here’s an overview of some of the must-visit parks:
Each of Tanzania’s national parks offers something unique, and the best time to visit depends on what you’re hoping to see.

In addition to incredible wildlife and landscapes, Tanzania offers special events and activities that can make your safari even more memorable, showcasing the best of East Africa. From the Great Wildebeest Migration to the calving season and birdwatching during the wet season, there’s always something amazing happening.
The Great Wildebeest Migration is one of the most incredible natural events on the planet. Each year, millions of wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles move across the Serengeti National Park in search of fresh grass. This migration typically happens from July to October, when the animals cross the Mara River. The best time to see the migration at its peak is in August and September, when huge herds are on the move.
During this time, you can witness thrilling moments as the animals face predators and cross the river, where crocodiles lie in wait. The migration is a unique highlight that makes Tanzania’s Serengeti an unmissable destination for those looking for a fantastic safari experience.
The calving season is another special time in Tanzania, taking place from January to March in the southern Serengeti. During this period, thousands of wildebeest, along with other animals, give birth to their young. It’s an amazing sight to see baby animals taking their first steps and predators like lions and cheetahs hunting during this vulnerable time.
The southern Serengeti is the best place to see the wildebeest calving season. The lush green landscape provides plenty of food, and the open plains make it easier to spot both the young animals and the predators that follow the herds. This is an ideal time to witness the cycle of life in action, making it a great time to visit Tanzania if you’re interested in seeing nature at its most dramatic.
For bird lovers, Tanzania is a fantastic destination. With over 1,000 species of birds, the country is a paradise for bird watchers. The best time for birdwatching is during the wet season, especially from November to May, when migratory species arrive. Parks like Lake Manyara and Ngorongoro Conservation Area are perfect spots to see colorful birds, including flamingos, storks, and pelicans.
The green season offers lush landscapes, making it a beautiful time for photography as well. While it’s not the best time for spotting big game, birdwatching during the wet season can provide a quieter and more peaceful safari experience, perfect for those interested in Tanzania’s incredible diversity of birdlife.
